I was so tired of feeling like the problem.
I‘m 36 years old, and I had been struggling with my weight for what feels like an eternity. I am 5'5" and I weighed 165 pounds, which means I was about 20 pounds overweight.
I have always loved food, I love cooking and I love going out to eat with my friends, but I’ve also always been an active person, and all through high-school and college I never felt like I had to actually work to manage my weight... (insert long reminiscent sigh).
Fast-forward to my late 20s and my body totally betrayed me. Okay, a bit dramatic, but there was a noticeable difference in the way a few extra pounds would hang around.
Yes, I started working remotely and found myself being more sedentary, but I never felt like I was really being unhealthy when it came to my diet.
When a few extra pounds turned into +10 and then +15, I joined a gym, I tried Keto, I tried intermittent fasting, I counted calories, you name it, and I tried it. Sometimes I lost some weight, but it always came back, to the point where I really felt like something was wrong with me.
I was beyond frustrated, I wanted my old body back, I wanted to feel like my energetic self again, and at the same time, I just felt like giving up.
But with my family history of diabetes and heart disease, I knew I was at risk, so giving up really wasn’t an option. I needed answers and I needed professional help to make a lasting change.

Why I Decided to Work with a Dietitian:
I knew I needed to develop lasting habits around food, I was tired of crash dieting, and wanted to learn how to eat and manage my weight in a sustainable way. So when a friend of mine who always seemed effortlessly fit mentioned her personal nutritionist, I was intrigued.
I had always thought that dietitians were specialists that only worked with wealthy people and celebrities who could afford them. It turns out, that’s not the case. A lot of regular people work with registered dietitians and it’s actually often covered fully by insurance, even if you’re not sick.
In my research, there were several companies that were bringing dietitian services to people like me, (not celebrities and not exactly rolling in disposable income).
I first considered Noom, but reading reviews it seemed heavily app-based, and I knew I would lose motivation if I didn’t have a true partner/coach keeping me accountable. Then I found Berry Street, which was more what I was looking for, but when I tried booking a session, they had very limited availability. I wanted something that was going to easily integrate into my life and not be a pain to schedule.
In the end, Top Nutrition Coaching and Nourish were the two nutritionist companies I found that best matched what I was looking for.
As a side note: In my research I learned there’s actually a big difference between someone with the title ‘Nutritionist’ and someone with the title ‘Registered Dietitian’. Click here to learn more.
What I Looked for in a Weight Loss Dietitian:

Personalization: I was tired of one-size-fits-all plans. I needed something that fit my lifestyle, my food preferences, my schedule, and my body type. As questions came up, I wanted to be able to ask and get answers quickly, and know that the answers were custom to me!
Accountability: I needed accountability and motivation when things got tough, or I knew I’d lose motivation when I got stuck.
Availability: I have a busy schedule, so I needed a plan with flexibility.
Sustainable Results: I wanted to lose weight, but more importantly, I wanted to keep it off long term.
Cost: I wanted a budget friendly option and hoped to pay around $150/month.
My Pick for Best Nutritionists for Weight Loss
I ended up trying both Nourish and Top Nutrition Coaching, and while both programs helped me to lose some weight, ultimately I benefited more from the additional personalization, actionable tips for my lifestyle, and the deeper analysis that I received from Top Nutrition Coaching.
My overall experience with Nourish was positive, but the advice I received from my dietitian felt too basic for my situation. I know I should sleep more, drink more water, and reduce my stress levels at work, but this wasn’t where I was going to see a lasting impact on my weight. Read more about my experience with Nourish here.
Top Nutrition Coaching was the only program that dug deeper and identified the cause of why I was not losing weight. My dietitian recommended doing blood work, which I never would have considered on my own. She analyzed the results herself, and it turns out that I wasn’t so crazy after all! I do actually have what’s called hypothyroidism, which impacts my ability to lose weight.
My dietitian created a plan built around my diagnosis, her guidelines felt actionable, and worked well with my lifestyle. I didn’t just lose 20 pounds, but I’ve kept it off for 4 months now and I am well on my way to my ideal weight.
I can’t even tell you the impact this has had on my life, I didn’t realize how much my struggle with my weight was impacting me on an emotional level. When I started seeing progress and keeping the weight off, I could feel the difference in my mood, my energy, and my confidence.
My Experience working with Top Nutrition Coaching🥇
Overall Rating - 4.5/5 Stars
With Top Nutrition Coaching, I had flexible options from the get-go. They offer three different plans, and with each one you get unlimited texting with your dietitian, so I could ask all my questions as they came up.
I chose the plan with weekly video calls with my dietitian, and while it was within my budget, it was a great surprise to learn all my sessions were covered by my insurance!
The specialists were super knowledgeable, my dietitian had over 25 years of experience. She left no stone unturned in our initial consultation, we talked in depth about my challenges with weight loss, my eating habits, my lifestyle, and my food preferences.
My dietitian took my concerns about an underlying issue seriously, and with my family history of heart disease and diabetes, she ordered some blood tests we could run to check for any imbalances. I didn’t have to go to my doctor for this, and it was pretty affordable. Her willingness to dig deeper ended up making all the difference for me,
Based on the blood work, she identified that I have hypothyroidism, and explained how it impacts my metabolism and my ability to lose weight. She also referred this information to my PCP so that I could get started on thyroid medication I nearly cried! I was so relieved to finally have an answer for why it all felt so impossible. More importantly, it was something that I could learn to manage.
Lori helped me craft a meal plan that took my thyroid issue into account, and it was not only manageable, but actually enjoyable. She could tell I loved food, and her recommendations never left me feeling restricted. Her guidelines were easy to understand and she helped me make adjustments and prepare for things like my friends bachelorette weekend, and traveling for work.
With Top Nutrition Coaching, I lost 20 pounds over the course of 4 months, with all of my sessions completely covered by my insurance! Today, I am still working with my dietitian Lori, and I’m happy to say that I have kept the weight off and am well on my way to my ideal weight.
What I Liked:
- Cost
Top Nutrition Coaching accepts most insurance, so my sessions ended up being completely covered! If your insurance doesn’t cover your sessions, TNC did have several pricing options, one being a text only plan for $99/month. - Nutrition Expertise
My dietitian’s knowledge and experience in nutrition, literally changed my life. Identifying my Thyroid issue was a game changer, she knew exactly what needed to be done as a result. - Personalization
My dietitian took my weight loss struggle so seriously and put so much consideration into my nutrition plan. The ability to text with her 24/7 was so helpful. Anytime I had questions or was going out to eat, I could get answers and recommendations ahead of time. - Accountability
I really underestimated the difference it would make to have an accountability partner. Our sessions kept me motivated, and when life got in the way she reminded me of my goals and how I could still be making progress. I never felt without support. - Results
With medication for my hypothyroidism and the constant support from my dietitian I can finally say I lost 20 pounds and I’m still well on my way to my ideal weight.
My Experience Working with 🥈 Nourish
Overall Rating - 4/5 Stars
I tried Nourish for a couple months and overall my experience was pretty positive. The coaches there are mostly Registered Dietitians, and I felt like they were experienced and sincere in their desire to help me.
My dietitian took a holistic approach, looking at my overall health and well-being. However, the recommendations felt a little too basic at times and dependent on me changing my lifestyle. My dietitian recommended things like getting more sleep, less stress, and drinking more water, which I don’t disagree with, but I could get those recommendations off of google. I felt a little left in the dark when it came to my concerns about the possibility of an underlying issue.
I liked the convenience of virtual appointments, but there were times when I found myself with a quick question after a session, or on a random weekday night, and had to wait to get help in the next session.
Cost wise, I appreciated that most of my sessions were covered by my insurance. It’s definitely worth checking with your insurance to see if this is an option for you as well.
What I Liked:
- Personalization
I appreciate that at Nourish my dietitian listened to my dietary preferences and I felt like what I said was taken into consideration in creating a custom nutrition plan. - Cost
One thing that was great about Nourish was that they were able to accept my insurance and my sessions were mostly covered. However, I know everyone’s insurance coverage is different.
What Could Have Been Better:
- Medical Expertise
My dietitian was definitely knowledgeable, but I felt like they could have dug deeper into possible underlying issues. - Accountability
I wished I had more contact with my dietitian between sessions as questions came up, it was hard to wait for the sessions to get answers and it was easy to lose momentum. - Results
I lost close to 10 pounds with Nourish, but it still felt like an uphill battle. I frankly needed more hand holding and consistency to make quick adjustments and stay consistent.
