Hi, I'm Isabella Maria

I am studying to become a dietitian. As a part of my studies I created a comprehensive guide on how to find the best dietitians and nutritionists near you!

Best services to find a registered dietitian nutritionist near you 2023

Last updated: 03/26/2023

My research process🔬

My third session!

First, I wanted to make sure I tested all of the leading platforms, but I wanted to be fair in my process so I used the below criteria.

  1. Find services that give you access to a registered dietitian - I tested platforms where you have some level of access to a provider who can provide you with guidance.

I tested a total of 8 platforms (see my spreadsheet below).

  1. Tested 8 different services - I attempted to sign up for each service to see if they took a comprehensive approach to understanding my needs. Nutrition is extremely personal and the root cause behind someone's challenges are unique and a function of medical, behavioral, and lifestyle factors.
  2. I tested each for one month -I signed up for multiple services and tested them out for a month. I am fortunate that my out of pocket expenses were covered by a grant, otherwise my review would have been limited to fewer services.
  3. I measured each service weekly based on a set of factors (see below) - Most services were based on recurring appointments and some had daily check-ins. To create a consistent review cadence Ievaluated them once per week against a set of factors that are evidence based.
  4. I scored and ranked these services according to my review system - I reviewed the services across several key factors that impact your ability to reach your goals, quality of life, and your overall experience with the service.

My scoring chart.

When evaluating these services I prioritized these factors

  1. Results
  2. Quality of Provider
  3. Personalization
  4. Sustainability of Recommendations
  5. Cost
  6. Availability
  7. Insurance Coverage

What's the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutritionist?

All dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians. See below for an explanation:

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist -
These are licensed healthcare professionals who have gone to school for nutrition and completed 1200+ hours of nutrition training in a medical system (similar to residency for doctors). The are held to a certain code of ethics and standards by a national board and the only professionals legally allowed to make a nutrition diagnosis and provide medical nutrition therapy, which is essentially counseling people on how to heal and solve their medical challenges with food.

Nutritionist - This is an unregulated and unprotected title and generally stands for someone who studies and claims to be an expert in nutrition.

Would you trust someone who is not a lawyer or doctor to give you legal or medical advice? Probably not. The same is true for nutrition and why you should only work with registered dietitians.

Nutrition led disease is the most common reason folks need to see doctor or from where disease develops. Finding the best expert is a wise way to invest in your health and well-being.

Why is working with a registered dietitian nutritionist effective?

The simple (and cheeky answer) is the right approach is different for everyone.

That's why you should run for the hills if someone tells you they have THE SECRET that works for all. Here are the things I've observed that lead to success:

- Proper understanding of the root cause: Before you can tackle the problem you need to understand what's driving it. For some folks they don't have enough time so they make quick choices, for others their hormones are out of wack, and for others it's a combination of factors. Solutions that identify your specific barriers are more effective because they are focused on solving your particular problem.

- High degree of expertise: There could be several factors affecting your PCOS, weight loss, diabetes, gut health issues, or whatever problem you are dealing with. It can be impacted by medications, sleep, food choices, quantity, stress, activity, hormones, medications, and the list goes on and on. Your approach might need to be different depending on what is most impactful to your journey. Expertise helps you discern what is or is not important to focus on.

- High degree of personalization: Consistency is key. As a result, any adjustments you make to habits or lifestyle should be sustainable. I have often found that how much we enjoy doing something and how easy it is to do is a great predictor of sustainability. Once you know the general changes you need to make a lot of the skill comes from figuring out how to implement those changes in a way that works for you and feels effortless.

- Focused support from an expert - Success is journey and going at it alone can be challenging. Having the support from an expert helps keep you on track, accelerates your progress, and keeps you motivated.

How do you find the right dietitian for you?

The short answer is it is difficult, but there are services out there that make it extremely easy if you know where to look.

I think the best providers have the following in common:

-
Registered dietitians - Licensed healthcare professionals trained in nutrition.

- Specialists - They specialize in the area of nutrition you need help with.

- Personalized Approach - Take a highly personalized approach to coaching.

- Results oriented - They work backwards from your goals.

- Evidence based - They know the research and don't recommend blatantly false adjustments that are not backed by science.

- Sustainable
- They are focused on sustainable outcomes, meaning working with you to make changes that make sense for your life.

- Long track record of success - The proof is always in what they've been able to achieve.

⭐ Overall Rating ️

Top Nutrition Coaching is the best service for finding the right registered dietitian nutritionist for you.

Their main focus is on empowering you to take control of your health vs. just providing you with a meal plan. They are extremely invested in your life goals and building a personalized nutrition and lifestyle plan that works for you without compromising your quality of life.

They have a team of world class registered dietitian nutritionists and an extremely high bar for who they work with (they accept less than 2% of all nutritionists that apply to work with them).

In addition, they have specialists that are skilled across all chronic conditions, women's health needs, sports performance goals, and much more. If you have a unique condition or challenge they will have the right expert.

Their program is evidence based, highly personalized, and tailored to the individual.

I was blown away by how effective they are, but not surprised because they don't skip any steps with the quality of their team and service.

❤ What I love ️

Unlike many platforms they are extremely invested in your success and that starts with getting you the right nutritionist.

They only hire registered dietitians and they have a comprehensive matching process to get you the exact right expert for you who has experience with your particular health conditions or personal goals.

Second, they are fast. Typically with these types of services, you can expect to spend multiple weeks waiting for your first appointment, and even then, that first appointment is usually dedicated to feeling out your new coach and establishing a baseline relationship. With Top Nutrition Coaching, I signed up on Wednesday and had my first session by Friday.

Third, they are relentlessly focused on helping you reach your goals and getting great value. I have to admit that between my own background in wellness and my pretty mediocre experiences with nutrition-related healthcare, and my poor experiences with other nutrition
coaching services, I was careful to go into this session with low expectations.

I was completely off the mark. For the first ten minutes of the hour-long session, Michelle (my nutritionist) and I got to know each other better as she dove into what I valued and my personal goals.

Once she realized that I had a pretty strong baseline of knowledge, she immediately switched gears and started to offer insight on specific and niche weight loss topics I would have never found on my own. From there we quickly pinpointed where some of my main challenges were and began to craft a plan. More so than following a set script, it felt like she adapted and modified her approach to not only address my concerns, but also match my knowledge level.

I honestly did not expect to get through that much in a single hour—so much so that I was not sure whether to start with my athletic or my weight loss goals—we ended up discussing both. By the time the first session was over (Michelle tacked on a free 15 minutes to cover some extras), we had scheduled the next session, set goals, had a list of resources for me to review, and started building a plan. Just a few short hours later, Michelle sent me a thorough breakdown of our session with my weight loss roadmap, goals for the week, and some resources that were going to help me better understand aspects of hormonal health/sleep and how they were affecting my weight.

It was clear from the jump that this service is highly invested in your success and they don't waste anytime trying to understand your goals and helping you make progress right from the first session.

🙈 What could be better

They do not accept insurance themselves, but most insurances cover their appointment fees. Additionally, they require a two session minimum commitment so if you're looking for a single session this might not be a great fit.

Typically the people that benefit from a single session only already have a strong handle on their nutrition journey.

📄 Description

The process took 48 hours. I booked the initial appointment within minutes of visiting the website, which was awesome. I scheduled my initial appointment with my nutritionist Michelle and instantly felt there was a genuine interest in understanding who I am as a person and why I was struggling.

I felt like I got tremendous value in just the first session and built rapport fairly quickly with my nutritionist. I am actually really excited to work with her to continue making progress and not only have I seen improvements to my weight, the best part is I honestly just feel better and there are no crazy restrictions, guilt, or shame associated with this program. Michelle is an expert and it shows.

The service has changed my life, and I look forward to progressing further with the support of Top Nutrition Coaching.

⭐ Overall Rating ️

First impression was great! I was able to book a free 20 minute consultation to see if the service worked for me within 72 hours. Their website was easy to use and quick to book my first consult.

My experience overall was solid. I would not rave about it but the advice I received was sound, although I think it had some of the traditional pitfalls common within healthcare.

❤️ What I love

They have an amazing library of resources and nutrition content. I found this particularly useful to explore in between sessions. Their team is comprised mostly of registered dietitians which was a plus although it seems like their team is quite small so each dietitian covers a bunch of different areas which limits specialization a bit.

I loved their approach to sustainable results and all foods fit as the evidence strongly points to that being a key factor in long term success.

🙈 What could be better

Most of the coaching you receive is limited to the in-session experience and since the technology is a bit limited you're only really getting "coached" once per week. Additionally, it suffered from the traditional pitfalls of healthcare where it took me over one week to book an appointment and I felt like I had to do a lot of the "driving" in the session vs. the coach jumping in and guiding me right from the start. Additionally, the up front of pocket cost was on the higher end.

📄 Description

Overall I thought OnPoint was a strong second option because they have quality providers and the advice is sound. They will take a personalized to coaching you and you will see results. I thought some of the traditional aspects of nutrition healthcare made the experience less than ideal (long weight times, limited to in-session experience, and lack of proactive suggestions/guidance) made me score this service a bit lower.

4/5

What I love:

  1. Wide range of specialists

  2. Mobile app

  3. Acceptance of insurance

What could be better:

  1. Coaching was underwhelming

  2. Quality of dietitians was okay

  3. Limited interactions between sessions

  4. Progress was slow

⭐ Overall Rating ️

I thought this was going to be my top choice going in given the ability to take insurance and what looked to be a well designed website and easy sign up process. Overall I found the actual coaching experience to be subpar and was underwhelmed with the quality of the advice and investment in my personal goals.

❤️ What I love

Nourish only works with registered dietitians and they have a tech forward approach with an easy to use sign up process and a nifty mobile app. I personally love their emails which also provide me with interesting tidbits on my health.

🙈 What could be better

At the end of the day what makes or breaks these services is the quality of coaching. A skilled provider is worth gold because of what they can help you uncover about your health and your specific challenges. This was not the case when I worked with my coach at nourish. My first session was extremely underwhelming and I felt like I had to drag my coach through it by oversharing information.

I get pretty uncomfortable when I feel like I'm "leading" the conversation because I primarily came here for advice and guidance. I also felt like the approach did not work well for me because it was very focused on intuitive eating and I do a lot better with structure and goals because I am quite results oriented. It did not feel like my personal preferences or needs were taken into account when pairing me up to the expert and that the approach did not match mine.

Additionally, I received no materials, guidance, or contact in between my sessions so the coaching itself felt basic and like I was a bit on an island on my own.

📄 Description

Overall I think if you know exactly what you need you can get sound advice because they employ registered dietitians and for the most part you'll get good information. If you're looking for support with a personal transformation and dramatically improving the quality of your life I think there are better options.

3.8/5

What I love:

  1. Speed of booking

  2. Single sessions

  3. Extensive provider list

  4. Offer insurance coverage

What could be better:

  1. Provider quality varies

  2. More like traditional healthcare

Check Availability

⭐ Overall Rating

Zocdoc is a great platform if you need to resolve questions in a single session. They are easy to book with and provide a seamless digital platform for you to get started. They also have an extensive list of providers.

I'd recommend it if you have one off questions but not as a full nutrition coaching service. The quality and consistency varies too much and its ultimately not what they focus on. Most of these marketplaces are designed to connect  you with a provider and fit more of the traditional healthcare model, meaning if you know exactly what you need they'll be a great option to quickly connect you to someone.

❤ What I love

Quick, easy booking process. Extensive list of providers. Easy to use digital booking platform.

🙈 What could be better

If you are looking to truly feel great in your body there are much better services that are dedicated to solving this problem. The personalization, coaching, and service offerings are extremely limited. Additionally the quality and approach of each provider varies dramatically making it exceptionally hard to choose who is the right person for you and it makes success on the platform hit or miss. Additionally, you don't receive support outside of sessions unless your specific nutritionist decides to go above and beyond.

📄 Description

Overall if you have some very specific questions this is a quick and easy way to get reliable answers. Highly recommend for those ad hoc situations.

3/5

What I love:

  1. Price

  2. Accepts Insurance

  3. How quickly you can book an appointment.

What could be better:

  1. Impersonal Diagnosis

  2. Impersonal Treatment plan

  3. Asks for unnecessary personal details before booking.

⭐ Overall Rating

Teladoc is a less seamless version of Zocdoc but the quality of the providers and the experience is fairly similar. One advantage which I really liked is you can pay a monthly membership fee if you plan to leverage it regularly, which will save you money and get you quicker appointments.
‍‍
❤️ What I love

The monthly membership is an awesome feature, especially for those who want to be able to access a nutritionist whenever you want.

🙈 What could be better

Very similar to Zocdoc. The quality and consistency of the service varies dramatically. The platform itself is also way clunkier than Zocdoc's.

📄 Description

I used Teladoc for a few sessions. Overall I think its a runner up to Zocdoc and if for some reason you can't find a provider there this is a good back up option for anyone that just needs quick session.

Why should you work with a nutritionist?

You should work with a nutritionist if you have certain goals such as losing weight, managing your diabetes, learning to navigate kidney disease, or anything else that might be impacted by your daily nutrition habits.

A nutritionist can help you:

1. Reach your long term health goals - (improve sports performance, lose weight, manage kidney disease, and much more)

2. Provide personalized nutrition advice - based on your individual needs, medical history, and lifestyle.

3. Create a tailored meal plan - to fit your lifestyle, food preferences, and habits.

4. Teach you to navigate nutrition choices - helping you become your own expert and feel confident making decisions.

5. Creating healthy grocery lists - to make being healthy at some easy.

7. Help you set achievable goals - providing you with the right guidance to see the change you want.

8. Educate you on portion control and mindful eating - helping you understand how much to eat and when.

9. Guide you in making sustainable dietary changes - nutritionists focus on helping you get results that last.

10. Accountability, support, and clinical monitoring - Review your progress, make adjustments, provide support and offer encouragement.

How does online nutrition counseling work?

Unlike traditional nutrition counseling, online nutrition counseling offers you the convenience of treatment from your home, workplace, or anywhere else you can get access to internet.

Online nutrition counseling provides a convenient and effective way for individuals to work with a licensed nutritionist and improve their quality of life.

Depending on the platform you choose, you will be able to select from a variety of licensed nutritionists or you will be matched with a nutritionist based on your particular needs.

Platforms such as Teladoc allow you to browse nutritionists and choose one based on their qualifications and areas of expertise.

On the other hand, platforms like Top Nutrition Coaching or Stronger U take the guesswork out of the equation by matching you with a nutritionist after you fill out a screening questionnaire about your current circumstances.

Once connected, you will typically engage in weekly or bi-weekly sessions. Online platforms often give you complete choice over the time and date of your appointments, enabling you to receive counseling flexibly around a busy schedule.

Recent studies have suggested that online nutrition counseling is just as effective as in-person counseling. A 2011 analysis of 22 randomized controlled trials found that there were no significant differences between online and in-person counseling in terms of effectiveness.

Research has also found that the bond formed between patient and nutritionist is just as strong and impactful with online counseling. This evidence suggests that online nutrition counseling can be a safe, effective, and convenient alternative to traditional counseling.

Is online nutrition counseling as effective as in-person?

Online nutrition counseling is just as effective as in-person counseling when it comes to changing dietary behaviors.

According to research published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In a study of 58 participants, participants who received online counseling had similar changes in dietary habits as those who received in-person counseling.

In fact, the study found that online counseling was more cost-effective than in-person counseling, with online counseling participants having a lower cost per change in dietary behavior.

Additionally, online counseling was more convenient, with participants citing greater flexibility and convenience as a major benefit of the online format. (McGill, E. W., & Rock, C. L. (2016).

Research has also found that the bond formed between patient and nutritionist is just as strong and impactful with online counseling. This evidence suggests that online nutrition counseling can be a safe, effective, and convenient alternative to traditional counseling.

Why choose online nutrition counseling?

Online nutrition counseling is becoming increasingly popular due to its accessibility, convenience, and affordability compared to in-person counseling, making it a good choice for many seeking to improve their health and wellbeing. It has many advantages, but it’s not a perfect fit for everyone:

Benefits of Online Nutrition Counseling

Convenience— The ability to receive counseling at any location with an internet connection is an advantage for many, especially those who live in rural locations or would struggle with the expense and time of travel. Instead, you can utilize 24/7 messaging services and weekly live appointments at a time and place of your choosing.

Finding the right nutritionist— Your choice of an in-person nutritionist is limited by geography. With online counseling, you can choose from thousands of qualified nutritionists or be matched with one tailored to meet your needs. Most online nutritionists are highly trained dietitians or nutrition coaches, each with a specialization, approach, communication style, and schedule, giving you more options to find the right fit.

Communication— You can choose what works best: text messaging, audio messages, voice, or video calls. Most online nutrition counseling plans include unlimited messaging to communicate your goals and progress at any time.

Price— Receiving counseling online is typically much more affordable than in-person nutrition counseling, and many providers offer reduced rates for those with financial difficulties.

Drawbacks of Online Nutrition Counseling

Requires internet connection—Given its online nature, receiving nutrition counseling online requires a stable internet connection.

No face-to-face meetings—If you prefer in-person interaction, online nutrition counseling may not be suitable as most online providers do not include face-to-face meetings with your nutritionist.

Not suitable for severe symptoms—Although online nutrition counseling is effective for a range of health goals, it is less effective, and sometimes inappropriate, for those experiencing severe symptoms or for conditions requiring medical supervision.

Who can benefit from online nutrition counseling?

For many people, online nutrition counseling is a great decision. Receiving online nutrition counseling online is effective in helping to develop healthier eating habits and lifestyle practices, which can help across a range of health conditions and goals, including:

If you are looking to reach specific goals or get help managing any of the above, then nutrition counseling might be the right choice for you.

Its unique features are especially beneficial for those:

How much does online nutrition counseling cost?

The best platforms cost anywhere from $40-100/week. This usually includes live sessions with a nutritionists, messaging options (email/text/app) as well as personalized meal planning, grocery shopping, and a lifestyle plan to help you get back in control of your health.

As a general rule of thumb, nutrition counseling is less likely to be covered than certain medical ailments.

How much can you save with online nutrition counseling?

It is clear that online nutrition counseling is more cost-effective than in-person, but when we look at what the leading service providers offer, it is even more advantageous. These providers provide a range of services, such as:

Unlimited sessions with a variety of communication options
Online nutrition counseling services offer an extensive range of communication technologies that they can leverage as an online service, including instant messaging tools, voice calling services, and even video live chats.

Online nutrition counseling services can also dramatically expand their team of nutritionists and, as a result of letting them work remotely, they are often far more accessible and affordable.

A huge portion of online services don't enforce the hours of operation, and even have as a requirement same-day responses.

When you compare this with how in-person nutrition counseling operates—in which clients need to visit their nutritionist at a brick and mortar location, at a set time, and cannot speak to their nutritionist until their next appointment—the value of online counseling rings even clearer.

Eliminate commuting costs entirely

Working with a nutritionist from home means you don't need to physically visit the nutritionists location. For anyone that has a busy schedule or lives in a less accessible area this is a great option and a huge limitation of in-person.

Online nutrition counseling can get you substantial savings

The cost savings, from personalized subscription plans to reduced travel costs, speak for themselves:

Online nutrition counseling - is cheaper more often than not than in-person.

Discounted pricing - Many platforms can make this available for those with difficult circumstances.

Insurance reimbursement - Most credible providers will provide you with a superbill that you can use to submit from reimbursement.

How to choose the right nutrition service?

When choosing the right nutrition service there are a variety of factors you need to consider:

How do you know if a service can help me succeed long term?

There are a few things you need to be aware of when identifying if a service will truly help you be successful long term:

Choosing your nutritionist

Choosing the right nutritionist can be challenging because your success will largely depend on the quality of the professional you work with and the tools they have at their disposal to support you. Here are some things you should look for:

Great Value: 4.5/5
We took some points off the board here because we think there technology can improve slightly to make the user experience a bit more seamless. The value is most definitely there though and we would recommend you think of this as an up front investment in your health that will pay dividends down the road.

Comprehensive: 4.5/5
They cover everything from meal planning, grocery shopping, macro break down, meal timing, diagnosing the root cause of your challenges, to education, skill building, and so much more. It's a one of a kind experience.

We took points off the board because we wish their tech platform was a bit more slick, but all in all it does exactly what you need it and the professionals here are world class.

🙈 What could be better
We would love to see a self-serve option for clients who don't want to speak with a nutrition specialist. That said, their specialists do a wonderful job of learning what your goals and needs are in order to find the right professional. Our guess is they could improve the accessibility of their service by improving this aspect.

You also need to provide a fair bit of information as you go through their health assessment, which may be a turn off to some. They mention this is a core part of the personalized nature of their service and what ultimately allows them to help you get long term, sustainable outcomes.
